Ascension of the Lord
Monday, 14 May 2018
Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord Jesus into heaven. He has gone to prepare a place for us and to send the Holy Spirit upon us so that we may be led to all truth. It is on this day that he spoke his last words to us while on this earth. There were many things to tell us, but he gave us at the very end the great commission. He charged us to evangelize all people, make them disciples and teach them his commandments and baptize them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This commission is our task as His disciples. Being a missionary and bringing Jesus to people and people to Jesus is an intrinsic part of being a Christian. It is essential to our Baptismal vocation.
It is a blessing that he does not leave us alone depending on our own strength to do this. He sends us the Holy Spirit and gives us the tools we need to spread the faith and the joy of the Gospel. We do not have to be theologians or trained in the catechism to preach the faith. We do this by how we love each other, how we live our lives, where we go, what we do. For instance, there is a powerful witness by making the sign of the cross and saying grace before a meal in a restaurant. People will know that you are a follower of Christ when you make sure you can go to mass on a Sunday when you are out of town on vacation or playing traveling sports. This is how we witness to Jesus Christ. Those very simple things. May each of you use the gifts you have and the gifts you received from the Holy Spirit in your Confirmation to evangelize, to teach all nations!
I would like to wish each of you Mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day! May your children praise you and bless you this day for all you do for them and for how you love them. Thank you for your witness of love and your witness to life.
May the Lord bless each of you and your families this week!
