Missionary Disciples is the theme for the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We are disciples of Jesus Christ if we call ourselves Christian. Being a disciple automatically means that we are missionaries as well. We bring Christ to others. We radiate Christ to one another and to everyone we meet. We are the Gospel that they encounter. Each of our parishes should be a school of discipleship where we learn how to be a disciple of Jesus.
The Bishop’s Annual Appeal assists all the parishes in forming disciples of Jesus Christ. It funds the Office of Evangelization which brought us the Living the Eucharist program this Lent. The Schools Office provides our school with guidance and assists our school with continuing education for our teachers. This same office helps our Parish Religious Education Program with certification programs for teachers so that we have confidence in what is being passed on to our children in the ways of faith. The BAA also funds the Vocation Office which oversees the formation of seminarians as they train to be priests. We need priests for our parishes and we need these priests to be zealous disciples of Jesus Christ so that they can help our people become good disciples.
Presently, only 214 families out of a possible 1,596 have contributed. I would love to see us reach 500 families giving a one-time gift or a pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you haven’t given yet this year, please do so. Again this year, a donor has given a matching gift. If you make a gift during the month of April and you increased your gift from last year, the amount you increase it will be matched dollar for dollar. If you did not give to the BAA last year and you make your gift this month, your total gift will be matched dollar for dollar. The match goes towards our goal here at St. James.
This weekend is the In Pew Appeal for the BAA. What does that mean? There are envelopes in each pew and envelopes in each bulletin. We will have a chance at every mass to complete a pledge or a one-time gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. You can also give online if you prefer to do that. Please visit www.diosav.org to give online.
Again, let’s have over 500 families give to the BAA this year and improve on the number of families who gave last year. Every gift helps us participate in building the Kingdom of God here in our Diocese of Savannah, the 90 counties of South Georgia!
May the Lord abundantly bless each of you and your families for your generosity!
