The Beauty of Faith

Thursday, 28 June 2018

The past two weekends I have witnessed once again the beautiful community and people of St. James! Your love and faith have been on display and it is extremely edifying to me and encouraging to see your faith come alive.

The first display was when we welcomed Jessica Schira, an aspirant of the Poor Clares who needed assistance in paying off student loans so that she could follow God’s call on her life to live as a cloistered nun. Those who stayed till the end of mass heard a beautiful story about faith and conversion and the Lord’s calling on her life. She witnessed to us about her faith and we showed our love and faith in our welcome of her and our generosity. She not only met her goal, she surpassed her goal by quite a bit. You, the faithful people of St. James, displayed the depth of your faith and your generosity in helping this young woman follow God’s call on her life. You helped build the Kingdom of God.

Just this past weekend, we said goodbye to Fr. Samuel. After each mass, we had a reception for him in the narthex. So many people lined up to wish him well and give him their love. At the end of the 11:30 mass, it was difficult for him to hold back tears as he looked out upon the many people to whom he ministered and who ministered to him this past year. Thank you for your display of love and care for Fr. Samuel.

These two instances exhibit to me the beauty of the faith that you have and the beauty of this community of faith here at St. James. What a blessing and privilege to be a part of it and an honor to be the pastor!

Yes, you read that correctly! We will be renovating the bathrooms in the narthex. We began on Monday, June 25th, and will hopefully be finished in a few weeks. We will be updating the sinks, tile, partitions, floor, and other cosmetic things. One of our parishioners, Coastal Custom Renovations, is doing the work for us. During this time, please use the bathrooms at the other end of the breezeway near the gym or the bathrooms on the other side of the gym. Thank you for your patience as we go through this project.

Our St. James community welcomes Fr. John Paul Heiser, a Benedictine from the St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He will be assisting us as a parochial vicar this next year while he lives at the Benedictine Priory at BC and while he teaches there. It is a blessing to have Fr. Heiser with us! Welcome!

In closing, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Independence Day! On this day, we thank the Lord for the gift of our nation and remember the sacrifices of so many who made this nation what it is. May the Lord bless each of you and your families as you spend this time together.

A safe and Happy 4th of July to each of you!
Fr. Daniel F. Firmin
