The Anointing of the Sick

To request anointing of the sick for a family member who is seriously ill or in the hospital, please contact the church office at 912-355-1523 to speak with one of our priests.

Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray…

Is any one among you sick? He should summon the presbysters [priests] of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up.

If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. James 5:14-15

The Anointing of the Sick

The sacrament of anointing of the sick is a gift from the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is a liturgical and communal celebration appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. It is meant to lead the sick person to healing of the soul, and also of the body if such is God’s will.

If the person is conscious of grave sin, the sacrament of anointing should be preceded by the sacrament of reconciliation.

When a Loved One is Sick

Our Ministry of Care members visit persons who are in nursing homes, homebound or under hospice care.

Please notify the church office when a family member is in need of a priest or a Minister of Care at 912-355-1523.

There is a Book of the Sick at the podium in the narthex as you enter the Church. Please write the names of the ill family members and friends for whom you would like us to pray. During the prayers of the faithful (petitions) at Mass, we will pray for all the people whose names are written in the Book of the Sick. These intentions will also be remembered at daily morning Masses.

When God calls a loved one home

Arrangements are made with the parish through your funeral home.

The family will meet with one of our priests before the funeral.

If you need help in planning and celebrating the funeral liturgy of a loved one, St. James offers a book, ”Through Death To Life.” Please stop by the church office to pick up a copy.

If you are pre-planning a funeral, please contact the parish office at 912-355-1523 so that one of our priests may assist you.

Are you called to serve in this ministry?

Pastoral Care

Our priests along with the Pastoral Care Committee visit parishoners who are ill or homebound and offer them friendliness and compassion. Of major spiritual importance is the priviledge of bringing the Holy Eucharist to those who are unable to attend Mass.
